Bike Trip to Wolfe's Neck Farm

The rain *mostly* stayed away on our recent bike trip to Wolfe's Neck Farm.  We had a wonderful day of biking, beach exploring, and visiting the farm.  Thank you Wolfe's Neck!

Pirate Fun!

In sports, GS-CP have been playing a fun pirates' game. Children are all members of the pirate's crew. They have to follow the pirate's orders: run to the ship or to the island, stand still when the pirate in chief asks to salute, create pairs and look through a field-glass at "longue vue", make groups of three and have lunch at "repas", or groups of four and pretend to dance at "danse".

We have different pirates in chief during each game and we are having a lot of fun. Thank you Suzie for teaching us how to play this new game!

Miscibility vs Immisciblity

Our 3rd and 4th Grade scientists learned about miscibility in science class last week.

When two liquids can be mixed to form a solution they are called "miscible." If two liquids cannot be mixed to form a solution they are called "immiscible." An example of miscible liquids is alcohol and water. An example of immiscible liquids is oil and water.

Make sure to ask our young scientists what they discovered in these experiments and whether or not certain substances were 'miscible' or 'immiscible'!

Initial Artwork

Our Early Childhood students are having a lot of fun working on their initials.  This project focused on the first letter of their name as well as vertical lines.

Morning work...

...is always a great way to start the day.  Students in Early Childhood and the GS/CP classroom begin each school day at various independent work stations.

3rd Grade English Language Arts Folktale Unit

In 3rd Grade English Language Arts class, students are examining folktales and what makes them so special.  They are reading various folktales from around the world and will soon be writing their own folktale.  During this unit, students are also reading 'Gooney The Fabulous', a novel by Lois Lowry about a 2nd Grade classroom that takes on their own folktale project.

Music Together

We are absolutely thrilled that Music Together™ classes will return this year at l'Ecole Française du Maine for our Early Childhood through grade 1 classes!  This week, students had their first music class with Miss Maggie.

Music Together of Greater Portland will continue to be providing our students (and parents!) with two fun-filled 15-week sessions. We will begin the year with "bongos", followed by "bells". Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the music class at any time as parent involvement is a large component of Music Together™. Parents, we hope you can join us on Monday mornings for the fun!
From the Music Together website:
Music Together is an international early childhood music and movement program for children from birth through age 7-and the grownups who love them®. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.

Monarch Butterflies

Students in Kindergarten and the 1st Grade classroom have been studying the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly. They have learned about eggs, caterpillars, chrysalides, butterflies etc.  They also conducted an experiment to see what types of food the caterpillar eats. Throughout this unit, students made observations and followed up with an art project.  This week, the class released the butterflies.

The CE2/CM1 students enjoyed a fun 'Classmate Scavenger Hunt' in English class last week.  What a fun way to get to know one another!

Art class with Dasha

It's always a treat to have art class with Dasha, our talented art teacher at EFDM.  The K/1 students enjoyed this adorable activity where they hand-painted butterflies.  A picture of each student was added for the finishing touch!
