Commemorative 10th anniversary 9-11-01

We the Freeport Flag Ladies need your help!

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the events of 9-11. To commemorate, we are organizing three days of events. We have been working very hard for several months, and now we turn to the general public to raise the funds needed for this important event. We need to raise $30,000 and we are turning to each of you for help. This event is non-political - it is about remembering our past and honoring our heroes. We are asking each American who receives this notice to place a $1.00 bill in an envelope and send it to the following address:

Event Description:

This will be a 3-day event. On Friday, September 9th 2011 there will be a candlelight vigil honoring the soldiers from Maine who were lost in Iraq & Afghanistan. Their photos will be displayed on white crosses set up in the park. There will be a bugler and piper echoing taps. Major General John Libby will be speaking along with a National Guard Chaplain. Following the vigil there will be a moving presentation of patriotic music and a photo documentary by a photographer who was at the Trade Center site for the first 3 weeks.

On Saturday there will be concerts at LL Bean's Discovery Park. Musicians will perform throughout Freeport. All branches of the military will be set up as well as Veteran's groups. A special area will be set up for children. In the evening, there will be an impressive pre-show of flags and music followed by a patriotic laser show.

On Sunday morning we will be doing the 9-11 Tribute as we have every 9-11, but this year we are expecting even more people to join us. Sunday afternoon we will be honoring our first responders by a parade of color guards, police, fire & rescue vehicles from nearby communities. This parade will lead in the Master Masons from NY, DC & PA who will be doing a cornerstone ceremony and unveiling of 2 pieces of steel from the World Trade Center in a beautiful monument.

On May 21st, the piece of steel for the monument will be brought from Kittery to Freeport by the National Guard, with a police escort. There will be a ceremony at the Public Works building. A display will be set up at the Fire Station of Freeport Flag Lady Memorabilia including many gifts we have been presented with over the years, flags flown over many camps in Iraq & Afghanistan, patriotic teddy bears and lots of other interesting things.
