Illusions d'optique...

The GS and CP have been studying the 5 senses and recently, it was time to discover sight!

They experimented with tools that can distort sight like kaleidoscopes, magnifying glasses, glasses, distorting mirrors to distort what they could see, make it bigger or smaller, to make it colorful...

A la Arcimboldo in art with the CE1...

In art, the 2nd graders discovered the art of Arcimboldo and the amazing photography series by Klaus Enrique Gerdes who recreates Arcimbildo's art in real fruits and vegetables.

They started by creating a portrait as a group made of vegetables.

Then each child created a portrait individually.

We used colored pencils to finish them.

Exploring our 5 senses at Audubon Center...

The GS and CP students went to the Audubon Center in Falmouth. There they discovered how animals use their 5 senses in nature. They learned so many things! For example, bats use their hearing to hunt at night, skunks use their bad smell to protect themselves from predators, foxes have curved ears to hear better (did you know they can hear a mouse up to one meter under snow?!). Some animals deceive their predator's sight with camouflage...
They came upon bees, chipmunks and wild turkeys during their trip. They touched rough leaves, soft leaves but stayed away from thorny branches!

They saw flowers, apples and mushrooms.
They smelled lemon, coffee, mint and maple syrup but were not able to recognize everything though!

They heard the wind, acorns falling from the trees, chirping birds and even cars!

They had so much fun!!

Apple Picking at Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards for the PS and MS

Our Petite Section and Moyenne Section went to Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards this morning to pick apples. They visited the orchard and learned about apples and varieties, how to pick apples, how to protect the trees and their fruits from the hungry deer...

Then everyone got to choose and pick an apple...and of course, EAT it! This was some children's favorite part.

At the end of the visit, they came back to the store where they were shown how the apples are sorted with a machine, depending on their size. They were very happy to experience the whole process.

What a great way to start the week!

Discovering South Freeport with the CM1 and CM2

In geography, the CM1 and CM2 are studying the everyday environment of the students. Each of them will study her/his immediate home environment and present it to the class.

On top of that project, they wanted to discover the environment of the school and went on a educational walk to explore the surroundings of the school. They used maps and took notes on their observations on relief, vegetation, housing and population.

They had a wonderful time and learned a lot!

The CM1, making art like cavemen...

This week in art we painted like caveman. We started by taking a virtual tour of Lascaux Caves. Lascaux Caves in southwestern France are famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings. In class we talked about how the caves where discovered, we observed and discussed the technics the caveman used to make the paintings. We also talked about the reasons Lascaux II located 200 meters away from the original was created, where the visitors may see the painted scenes without harming the originals.

We worked individually on images of animals and we also created a group project where we painted a part of the cave wall.
We crumpled the paper and pre painted the background using consentrated black coffee to make it look like a rock wall. We used charcoal, burnt wooden sticks, and handmade spice paints to paint animals.
